Two suspects in murder of 17-year-old Gaala Adan face fresh charges after one suspect was declared mentally unfit

Principal Prosecution Counsel Bernard Owour told the court on Thursday that the two allegedly murdered Gaala Adan, a 17-year-old refugee girl, on March 22, 2025 in Wajir County.

Two men have been charged afresh with the murder of a 17-year-old refugee girl in Wajir, after the Garissa High Court set aside an earlier plea because one of the co-accused was declared mentally unfit to stand trial.

The Director of Public Prosecution charged Mohammed Kassim Tiffow, the husband of the deceased, and Adan Mohammed Ahmed, after a mental assessment report showed that their co-accused, Mussa Sheikh Ahmed, was unfit to take a plea.

Principal Prosecution Counsel Bernard Owour told the court on Thursday that the two allegedly murdered Gaala Adan, a 17-year-old refugee girl, on March 22, 2025, at Lolkuta South Sub-location, Wara Location, Hadado Sub-County in Wajir County.

Gaala Adan, born on January 1, 2008, had been married to Mohammed, aged 40, in a ceremony held according to Somali rites on February 22, 2025, at Dagahaley Refugee Camp.

The two accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before Justice John Onyiego.

Justice Onyiego ordered that Mussa Sheikh Ahmed be taken to a mental health facility for treatment.

He will only be required to plead to the murder charges once a future assessment confirms that he is fit to stand trial.

The court also directed that Mussa be admitted to Mathare Mental Hospital and ordered the Garissa probation office to file a new pre-bail report, after the one presented on Thursday failed to include the views of the victim’s family.

The accused will remain in custody at Garissa GK Prison until May 19, 2025, when the matter will come up for mention.
